On Sunday 15th May, Old Trafford, Manchester United’s football stadium was evacuated, in response to a suspect package found within the stadium.
At the Manchester United stadium, the ground management team are responsible for ensuring the safety of spectators, this is similar at other sporting venues across UK and Europe.
The stadium evacuation process at Old Trafford was conducted impeccably and all spectators were safely evacuated from the ground, and thankfully the threat turned out to be a hoax.
The item that caused this disruption at the stadium was a training device which had been accidentally left following a training exercise involving search dogs. This device was signed out by the contractor as to have been recovered along with 13 others.
Human error led to this being a live safety incident and definitely could have been prevented, if an appropriate audit trail procedure was followed, such as; date and time stamping each dummy device with a photographed location, and shared across the team or relevant members.
As the security threat level to sports grounds across Europe remain severe, due to the incidents in France and Germany last year, being prepared is paramount to stadium security.
